  4. Country Description:  Gibraltar, a British dependent territory, is a
  5. peninsula connected to Spain and projecting into the eastern end of the
  6. strait of Gibraltar.  Tourist facilities are widely available.

  8. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A visa is not required for
  9. tourist stays up to three months.  For further information concerning entry
  10. requirements for Gibraltar, travelers can contact the Embassy of the United
  11. Kingdom at 3100 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008; tel
  12. (202) 462-1340 or the nearest British Consulate General in Atlanta, Boston,
  13. Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, or San Francisco.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Medical care is available.  U.S. medical insurance is
  16. not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers have found that in
  17. some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage
  18. has proved to be useful.  Information on specific health matters is
  19. available through the Centers for Disease Control's hotline for
  20. international travelers at (404) 332-4559.

  22. Crime Information:  Gibraltar has a low crime rate.  However, pickpocketing,
  23. theft of unattended baggage, and theft from vehicles can occur.  Popular
  24. tourist attractions such as museums, monuments, restaurants, hotels and
  25. transportation systems are often areas where criminals operate.

  27. The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately
  28. to local police and to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  U.S. citizens
  29. can refer to the Department of State's pamphlet  "A Safe Trip Abroad" for
  30. ways to promote a more trouble-free journey.  The pamphlet is available from
  31. the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office,
  32. Washington, D.C. 20402.

  34. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  35. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, and dealing in
  36. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  37. and fines.
